Azee ("Ah-zay") is a specialty pharmaceutical company focused on the advancement of a new class of compounds referred to as small molecule
anti-genomic therapeutics (SMATs). Azee is the Native American word for medicine, and
reflects the origin of our technology in natural medicines. The SMAT technology was
developed using $21 million in biodefense funding from the Defense Advanced Research Projects
Agency (DARPA) and the United States Army Medical Research and Materiel Command (USAMRMC). SMATs
were created as novel broad-spectrum countermeasures to bacterial, viral, and parasitic pathogens.
The biodefense research program was terminated voluntarily after the sale of Genesoft Pharmaceuticals
(South San Francisco), and Azee Pharmaceuticals was started to continue the
development of the SMAT technology and to commercialize the drugs for public markets.
